The Effect of the Intraoperative Colon Preparation with Povidone-Iodine

Abstract
Elective preoperative antimicrobial colon preparation has been accepted practice of many surgeons in prevention¡¯s of postoperative infections occurred in colon surgeries. However, patients receiving emergency surgical treatments for various colonic diseases cannot receive the full benefits of oral antibiotic colon preparation. Antibiotics act by interfering with bacteria metabolism and replication, at a minimum, several hours are required for effect.
In urgent situation, with a limited amount of intraoperative time to reduce the members of colonic microorganism, a topical microbicide with a wide antimicrobial spectrum which is effective with a period of minutes is required. Iodine is suchan agent.
Povidone-iodine is an iodine preparation that has proved nontoxic and effective in a variety of clinical and experimental applications.
This study demonstrate that it is possible to produce a significant reduction in intracolonic microbial counts-both aerobic and anaerobic-following brief intraoperative treatment with 10% povidone-iodine solution.
